Facts on Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy

If you have a problem such as exocrine pancreatic efficiency, it means that your pancreas is unable to produce the enzymes that are needed to help in your food digestion, and the absorption of the nutrients. The best way to cure it is to undergo a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy.

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, popularly known as PERT, is represented by capsules that are considered to be pancreatic enzyme supplements and its content is mixtures of digestive enzymes. It also has lipase that is responsible for the breakdown of fat; the protease that will assist in the digestion of the protein; and the amylase for the digestion of the carbohydrates.

The right dosage for PERT is dependent in a case-to-case basis, but for most people, their intake is often done in two capsules during the course of their meal. There are many things to consider yet for your dosage and few of them are the residual function of your pancreas, the fat content and size of your meal and lastly, the PERT goals.

It is recommended by experts that PERT must start in low dose and should gradually increase as needed. You can also follow certain tips for you to achieve a successful medication.

Your first capsule, if you need to take more than one, must be taken together with your first bite of food, the succeeding one should be taken on the midway of your entire meal. Put in mind that enzymes work well if they are being mixed with the food.

Your next tip is to not take the medicine if you haven’t eaten anything. Put in mind that the digestive function of your pancreas is already performed by your supplement and the enzymes can function well if they have food mixed to them.

Another tip to remember is not to repeat a dose if you have skipped a meal. The enzymes function 1 hour after your have taken them but if you have excessive intakes, this might lead to more side effects.

Take your medication every meal and never take it twice in a given meal if you happen to skip the dose on your previous meal.

Also, you need to swallow the capsule in whole and not chew it. You also need to drink water with your meals. If you love to eat snacks, you can also take your medicine but in half dose only. You must also store the medication in a room temperature because a wrong storage might damage the capsule.

Lastly, you must know the right medication for you by seeing your doctor regularly.
